STS 3 Star Designation

We are celebrating the 3 STAR designation awarded to Saint Joseph’s cardiovascular surgery program by the Society for Thoracic Surgeons. Congratulations to all on achieving this highest ranking for avoidance of morbidity (complications) and medications (appropriate medications prescribed and administered). Special recognition goes to our cardiovascular surgeons who were critical to this achievement.

Note: The Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Adult Cardiac Surgery National Database is the oldest and most prestigious clinical registries. It includes data on all cardiac surgical procedures except transplants. The NQF endorsed composite measures are reported and rated only on the largest population (CABG patients). The data definitions are developed by clinical experts in the held and undergo sophisticated statistical analysis by the Duke University Clinical Research Institute.

Healthcare Reform

Due to recent and future changes in medicine driven by Healthcare Reform, Peachtree Cardiovascular felt it necessary to find a partner. After careful consideration, the majority of our physicians chose to partner with Saint Joseph's hospital in Atlanta over the other hospitals where we held privileges. This decision was due to their superior technological advances, their commitment to invest in state-of-the-art equipment, and their commitment to compassionate patient care.

Dr. Douglas Murphy, Dr. David Langford, Dr. Steven Macheers, Dr. Averel Snyder, Dr. Jeffrey Miller and Dr. Sudhir Srivastava are proud to announce their new partnership with Saint Joseph's Hospital and are happy to welcome Dr. T. Sloane Guy into the group, now known as Peachtree Cardiovascular Surgeons at Saint Joseph's, LLC.

Our physicians offer the highest level of minimally invasive surgery backed by Saint Joseph's Commitment of providing compassionate care with the country's most advanced robotics and heart transplant destination therapy programs.

Excerpt from The New England Journal of Medicine:November 3, 2010On September 7, 2010, Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) reported the results of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures at 221 U.S. cardiac surgery programs. The voluntary reporting of risk adjusted outcomes in approximately 20% of U.S. Cardiac Surgery programs is a watershed event in health care accountability. The reporting ratings derive from a registry developed by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) in 1989. More than 90% of the approximately 1100 U.S. cardiac surgery programs participate in the registry. Registry data are collected from patients' charts and include key outcomes such as complications and death, severity of postoperative illness, co-existing conditions, surgical technique, and medications.  These data are maintained by the Duke Clinical Research Institute and are analyzed with the use of well-tested statistical methods.  For the full article, please visit www.nejm.org (End of excerpt)
